Contemporary living room complete with dining area, simple yet elegant.

Just think about it. The Living Room is your biggest chance to create that “wow” factor in your home, especially for guests. It’s also almost always the first impression others will get of your home as well, due to its central location. It’s no small wonder then that so many people spend so much time redesigning their living rooms.

So are you ready to get to work? With a few fresh ideas and a readiness to work, you can create a breathtaking environment for a fraction of the cost.

1. Try mixing it up a little. Adding a few patterns into your living area is a great way to give it a little more life, and can be very affordable! Always try to pick a color scheme beforehand, and limit yourself to three or four different main colors. Curtains or shades are always great places to sneak in a little dash of vibrant color, and can be made by hand. Go for solid colors on your furniture to give a little gravity to the space. As always, don’t be afraid to try new things and try getting samples of any fabrics before you buy.

2. Don’t be afraid to go with a simple color. Sometimes you have to work with what you’ve got. Do you have a black sectional couch and a black coffee table? Continue the color throughout the area to create a monochromatic effect. By using what you already have to plan the next few items, you can save lots of money in the long term. This can be done with white as well, and when different textures as opposed to colors are thrown in you can be sure things will still be interesting.

3. Try updating old furniture without having to sew. Those old bamboo sided chairs can be made into new and expensive-looking pieces of real estate with a fresh new paint coat and some new fabric stapled over the top of the cushion. Just pull it tight and shoot a few staples into each side to shape it properly, then staple the corners. Also, consider high intensity or extremely saturated colors. It’s always a good idea to go with a blue or green to add a little comfort to your living area.

4. Update your living room with inexpensive accessories every season. If you have plenty of neutral tones in your furniture and walls, you can make stark changes with easy swaps of a few pillows or even a throw blanket. A new piece of art can also easily be obtained at your local discount store or online, the possibilities are truly endless even when on a tight budget.

As you can see, with a little thought and creativity we can create new and beautiful environments for cheap. So use your noggin, and don’t be afraid to experiment with something new!
